How are Dylan Thomas, a conference in Swansea and Elliotshill connected?
The British Society of Gerontology (BSG) Conference takes place next month in Swansea University. This has become over the years a prestigious event bringing together experts from all over the world to discuss many aspects of working with older people.
The title of the conference planned for Wednesday 5th of July to Friday 7th of July, reflects a famous poem by Dylan Thomas: “Do not Go Gentle”
Do not go gentle into that good night, old age should burn and rage at close of day; Rage rage against the dying of the light. Dylan Thomas 1914 – 1953
The poem is spoken on the link below on this vintage recording by Dylan Thomas himself:
It is all intended to put a much needed positive artistic and cultural view on the aging process.
The BSG 46TH annual Conference in Swansea has the title:
“Do not Go Gentle: Gerontology & A Good Old Age “and more information can be found on the following link
At elliotshill we have been associated with this major conference in a very special way as we entered a competition open to residential care homes about the art of aging. Entrants were asked to submit art work and taking the skills of our key staff especially, Lizzy Waterhouse and Janet Ward they developed an innovative and wonderful art piece, which is shown in a number of pictures below.
All table top art work will be judged by Beti George the BBC Wales personality, who was also the partner of the BBC TV commentator and sports journalist, David Parry Jones. He died recently after suffering so long with Alzheimer’s disease.
The elliotshill contribution also included a poem from one of our residents Alun Williams which is also incorporated into the sculpture
It is worth seeing the artwork again, pictured below, as if you look carefully you may see the coastline of Pembrokeshire drawn on it
I will let you know if we are selected as winners in the judging but if you would like to learn more about elliotshill services please contact: firstname.lastname@example.org
